This guide applies to AnyKey hosting accounts with cPanel database tools. A website needs both a database and a database user with permission to access it.
Before you start
Keep database passwords in a password manager. Do not use your client-area password or put credentials in a support ticket.
Create and connect the user
- Open cPanel using the access details for your hosting service.
- Find Database Wizard. Older interfaces call it MySQL Database Wizard. If unavailable, look for Manage My Databases.
- Create the database. Record its full name, including any account prefix.
- Create a separate database user with a strong password. Record the full username.
- Assign that user to this database. Select the permissions required by your application. If its installer requires all privileges, grant them for this database only.
- Enter the full database name, username, password and server hostname in the application's configuration. Use the hostname supplied with your hosting details; ask support if it is unclear.
Check the result
Confirm the user is listed against the database, then test the application. Creating a user without assigning it will not provide database access. Use cPanel to create databases and users, rather than phpMyAdmin.
